Episode 92 turned out to be a busy episode for both Natty and I. We were fortunate enough to have yet another in-studio guest and featured an interview with a New York Times best selling author.

We started off with headlines and event listings.

Security officials in New York City and Washington DC were on high alert this weekend after new intelligence was gathered surrounding a possible terrorist plot involving both cities.

Senior US Security offices are working on what they are calling a credible threat that will coincide with the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The threat is believed to involve a vehicle bomb but US officials are not ruling out other means.
World Trade Center site - May 2011.
Information surrounding the plot derived from details that were found during the raid on former al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden this past May.

US Officials are concerned that three individuals involved in the plot may have already entered the United States but are stressing that they cannot confirm those details at this time.

The United States department of Homeland Security will be operating at a heightened level of readiness as the world prepares to commemorate the 10 year anniversary.

Commuters in the St James  found themselves in a snag today as both directions of Portage Avenue between Overdale and Lyle streets were closed due to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.

Eyewitness reports also state that  Around 7:45 this morning two vehicles collided with each other before striking a female pedestrian.  One witness stated that one of the vehicles involved burst into flames.  The female pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Further details were not immediately available at press time.

Shoppers at Sobeys were surprised to find found lower prices while grocery shopping this week as the company announced reduced prices on over 4,000 items throughout stores in Manitoba.

The price slashes come as an effort to provide better value to their customers.

The company also stated that they are maintaining competitive advantage against big box competitors like Walmart who has recently introduced a supercentre concept, and Target who is expected to arrive in Winnipeg by 2013.
Company officials hope the price reductions will attract new customers while meeting the needs of regular shoppers.

In previous episodes you may have heard Natty and I talk about a local musician by the name of Jamie Rumley. On episode 75 as part of an exclusive radio release, Natty and I played a single called Behind Closed Doors from Jamie's new album What Are You Waiting For.

At that time Jamie was still in the process of mastering the single and developing plans for a CD release party. After a few months of patiently waiting Jamie announced that her CD Release party would be held at the West End Cultural Centre on Wednesday September 14th.

In preparation for her launch party next week we welcomed Jamie and members of her band down to UMFM studios to record some singles as part of The Aimless & Andy Sessions.

During her in studio session Jamie preformed an scaled back acoustic version of her song Behind Closed Doors for our show.

Afterwords we sat down and had an interview with Jamie to talk more about the album and her thoughts on the CD Release Party.

You can download your copy of Jamie Rumley's track Behind Closed Doors (Live UMFM - The Aimless & Andy Sessions) by subscribing to our in studio sessions podcast in iTunes.

For many students across the country this week marked the beginning of a new University semester. For some students this week will mark the first week of a long term lifestyle change.

Common opinion around the University of Manitoba campus is that it takes about one to two years to fully become comfortable living in the University lifestyle. Most students think the best way to grow and feel at home on campus is to become involved in the campus community and make the most out of the education.

This week, I spoke to New York Times best selling author and international advice columnist Harlan Cohen  to get his professional opinions on how to survive the University Experience.

Cohen is the author of the  book The  Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College.

Just as the title suggests, the book is composed of tips and stories on a wide variety of real life issues that students are faced with while attending University or College.

Some of the topics include personal finance management, alcoholism, university romance, life inside the classroom and among other things how to deal with the naked roommate.

What I found interesting is that the topics discussed in the book (now in it's fourth edition) are written by students around the world who have wrote in to Harlan in hopes of sharing with fellow peers.

During my interview with with Cohen we discussed how the book was composed and learned more about it's origins.

You can purchase your copy of the Naked Roommate at most commercial  book retailers or online at http://www.nakedroommate.com/

My interview with Harlan can be downloaded from the Wake Up Winnipeg podcast via the iTunes music store.
