Wake Up Winnipeg Review - The Residents at The WECC

Review - THE RESIDENTS - THE WECC - Winnipeg MB. Canada - 3/24/2011

By Andru Valpy - CJUM 101.5 FM

Experimental. Weird. Highly entertaining.

These were the words that came to my mind while watching The Residents play their first show in Winnipeg at The West End Cultural Centre on March 24th. Known for their role in the avant-garde music scene, The Residents are very creative and visually appealing with what they bring to the stage.

In my years of concert going and reviewing I have not yet seen a band as "out there" as the residents.

Flashback to 1966 when experimental rock and roll was all of the rage.

Heavily influenced by a evolving underground culture, bands like The Doors and Pink Floyd were creating sounds and songs that had fans gazing blankly trying to figure out exactly what it was they were hearing.

Meet The Residents.

Formed under a mask of animosity, the foursome seemed to lurk out of the swamp lands in Shreveport Louisiana. After a brief hiatus, the band formed once again in 1969 and have been creating art continuously since then.

To this day, the shield of mystery seems to remain present with very little information actually known about who the band is composed of. Some have speculated the members of The Residents are actually those of their management team known as "The Cryptic Corporation" which was founded shortly after the band was formed.

But denials and dead end answers are all anyone have ever seemed to get (unless of course "you're in the know" as they say...)

Fast toward to 2011.... insert a man wearing a over-sized black and white housecoat.

He stares at the crowd with a thin-looking latex face mask, balding curly grey hair and black clown-shoes that would make Bozo (The Clown) jealous.

With that picture painted in your head you have The Residents performing at The West End.

In a dark two hour performance The Residents took fans into a world reminiscent of the early seventies.  If you thought you were hallucinating, think again. . .

Thanks to a brilliant multimedia presentation, a staticy television set and mysterious melodies stemming from the stage, The Residents created an atmosphere that had fans staring in awe as to what they were witnessing.

And who don't forget the "Mirror People"?

 . . . "I'll tell you about that later
".

With bizarre hand gestures, grody dance moves and rayless voice-disguisers the lead singer took listeners to a completely different planet. It reminded me of something Tim Burton may have once created.

At times, some of the lyrics didn't even really seem to be clear.  It was as if grandpa had a few too many drinks and got up for karaoke and was making up the words as he was going along.

Quite amusing.

Another eerie moment was when the video projectors introduced us to a man who appeared to have been filmed with a fish eye effect, smoking some form of substance (be it tobacco or otherwise...) who was flashing back through random mémoire's of his life. At one point, the story teller educated us on death and his experiences on the subject. I believe the story teller even mentioned his pet gold fish who ultimately faced a horrible end.

But perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the night was when we were finally told what the mirror people really were.

(...Insert mandatory spoiler alert here...)

With the audience sitting at the edge of their seat, practically begging for an explanation, the lead singer produced a hand held mirror and warned the front row that they could possibly be in danger.

He demonstrated how the mirror worked, and educated that it had two sides to it as if to say "nothing up my sleeve".

Then. . . it happened.

The house went black and there shining from the mirror was a circle of light illuminating the mirror and our dear entertainer appeared to be resisting whatever it was he was seeing in the reflection. One could swear he actually thought he was being sucked in by this mirror. Thankfully (for Grandpas sake) the lights came back quickly and our host didn't seem too phased. A short lived trip.

The two hour show was worth every penny of the ticket price. In fact, I was offered more than face value to let someone into the show but kindly rejected because I knew this sold out show could just very well be a once in a lifetime experience.

Worth noting is that most of the props that were used in this performance were lent to the band for their Winnipeg show which gave the stage a true home-like appearance.

If you are curious to discover more about The Residents I encourage you to review any of their experimental DVD projects or CD's but suggest doing so in the comfort of our own home.

I promise that once you explore The Residents you will know exactly what it is about the band that I am talking about, and just like tonight's retailing of the mirror people, it will all make sense. . .

Episode 70 we talked about local concert happenings including the announcements made by The Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Winnipeg Folk Festival Glass Gardens- Photo by Andru Valpy.
This year’s festival line-up features an eclectic mix of local, US and international artists including The Jayhawks (Minnesota) who just recently reunited, legends Little Feat (California), and M. Ward (Oregon) who is making folk music cool for a whole new generation of listeners. For millions of fans across the US and around the world, The Del McCoury Band (Tennessee) is the epitome of the “high and lonesome” bluegrass sound and Toots and the Maytals (Jamaica) are living legends of ska and reggae music, performing a unique and original combination of both genres infused with gospel, soul and rock.
This years folk festival will also include performances from KD Lang, Blue Rodeo and Tegan and Sara.
On this episode we featured a track from Trampled By Turtles (Minnesota) which was recorded in 2009 from the 10,000 Lakes Festival.  Trampled by Turtles will also be playing at this years Folk Festival.

More information on the Winnipeg Folk Festival can be found by visiting The Winnipeg Folk Festival Website at winnipegfolkfest.ca.
Also on today's show Natty introduced our new segment called World Beat in which we will feature artists and music from around the world in an effort to introduce our listeners to songs they may not have heard of.
To kick it off, Natty introduced us to Butterfly Boucher who performed alongside Sarah Mclaughlin at The MTS Centre on March 8th 2011.
We played a track called "Another White Dash" from her debut album "Flutterby" which was released in 2003.
Natty recalled the first time seeing Butterfly Boucher on a previous tour. Natty shared that she only ended up purchasing Boucher's album after she returned a Mclaughlin tour t-shirt in exchange for the Flutterby Album.
Finally on this week's episode we followed up with Episode 69 and our discussion with Darren Ford on the return of a NHL Team to Winnipeg.
The feedback we received from our fans was impressive. Some questions that stemmed from our conversation were based on naming rights to a NHL Team in Winnipeg.

MTS Centre Winnipeg - Photo by Andru Valpy.
Some speculated that it would be called The Winnipeg Jets, others (including Andru) thought that True North Sports & Entertainment might just retain the rights to The Manitoba Moose and just keep with their marketing campaign with them, others thought it would be something completely different.

We opened up our e-mail inbox to your comments and thoughts on what you would call a NHL team in Winnipeg. E-mail us at info(at)wakeupwinnipeg(dot)com with your name suggestions for a NHL Team and we will let you know what we feel our favorite pick ends up being.

Tune in next week for another action packed adventure of Wake Up Winnipeg on UMFM 101.5 FM

On episode 69 we brought in Victor Jarman who is a local sports enthusiast.

In recent episodes we have mentioned to our listeners that True North Sports & Entertainment have put in a purchase offer on the struggling Phoenix Coyotes

With these announcements and recent developments with the coyotes we thought it appropriate to discuss the popular topic of NHL hockey in the City of Winnipeg.

To do so we interviewed Darren Ford who is the founder of jetsowner.com, a campaign website that was designed to promote and support the return of The Winnipeg Jets (or a NHL team) to Winnipeg.

"What I can tell you...is there's something to be said for True North Sports Entertainment, who are all very smart business guys, even considering something like this in the first place if they didn't think (the team) would be a long term successful franchise."
Explained Darren during our conversation.
"I think what they've done brilliantly is setup Winnipeg for a situation where it was nothing like what we had of The Jets in the past and that is complete ownership and complete operating of the MTS Centre, in addition to what is going to be the this district called Shed, the sports and hospitality entertainment district to bring in revenue streams that were unheard of before....

...The revenue streams that we will see today are nowhere as near as what they were back then, and that's just a huge step right away and fan support, along with corporate support, has to be there long term. There's no doubt about that".
During this conversation we learned about what it would take for Winnipeg to support a NHL franchise which includes both fan and corporate support. Ford explained that 100,000 Winnipeger's wouldn't need to go to 41 games per season to support a NHL team in our city, but rather have the support to go to at least 7 to 11 games per season, or however many they can afford.
"Too many people think we need 15,000 Winnipeger's buying 41 games. Well we need 100,000 Winnipeger's buying something and there is plenty of support for that".
With the Phoenix Coyotes having poor attendance (possibly due to poor performance during multiple seasons), Victor asked Darren for his thoughts on what would happen if a NHL team did not preform well during a regular season and how it would affect ticket sales and overall attendance.

Fords response was answered beautifully:
"Let me tell you, The Bombers haven't done anything since I was in junior high school and they still get twenty something thousand season ticket holders a year it's staggering. That is incredible for me personally because The Bombers frustrate me to no-end but yet they keep going, and in that horrible facility yet. So I think we're actually quite resilient here in Winnipeg, despite having losers".
When I asked Ford how a NHL Franchise would be different this time around, Ford explained that it was a different generation and a new era and that the NHL Caliber front office and staff are really doing a great job of marketing to today's demographic market.
"Comparing 1993 and 94's stat's to today's, It's a different generation. I know for myself, my age group compared to my own fathers...I mean he's even amazed at what people will go and constantly drop on rock concerts now which you can't go to a good concert for less that one hundred and twenty dollars".
Andru Valpy Photo
My last question was when Ford may expect to hear some sort of decision a announcement, it was apparently the million dollar question.
"Well you know, that's the million dollar question. It could seriously be as early as next week, or it could drag out for another 30-60 days. But there becomes a time when it becomes too late for next season, I truly think that we're going to get there this time though."
We expect to talk with Darren Ford and with Victor Jarman in upcoming episodes of Wake Up Winnipeg as we  continue to follow this story. For more information, fans and supporters are encourged to visit Darren's website at http://jetsowner.com/

In other news, we touched briefly on the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan last week. Natty and I expressed our thoughts and condolences to those effected by the earthquakes, tsunami and later the nuclear meltdowns that tragically hit the country.

As mentioned by station manager Jared McKetiak on the UMFM web-page:

"Many of our listeners, as well as many of UMFM's own volunteers, have contacted us today asking how they can help with the relief efforts. After a little research, I can suggest that donating to one of the following organizations will certainly help to make even a little difference."

Some organizations collection donations and working towards relief efforts in Japan can be found below:
Donations are also being collected on campus within University Centre with 100% of the proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross.Additional information may be found at http://umfm.com%20/

Finally, on this weeks episode Natty ended the show with her thoughts on her recent visit to the Royal Canadian Winnipeg Ballets performance of Wonderland.

Her thoughts are as follows:

Adapted from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”,

RWB’s WONDERLAND takes us on another adventure down the rabbit hole with Alice. As we are whisked away. Images of teacups and playing cards start swirling through a vortex, giving us the impression that we’ve seen this all before. But, we haven’t.

Ballet fused with contemporary and hip hop, stunning visuals projected onto a moving stage, and a megaphone; make this one of the most unique performances I’ve seen in a long time.

Tara Birtwhistle does an amazing job of making you love the awkward, and overly boisterous Red Queen. Fumbling around on stage, cracking jokes about production value, and following it up with the famous line “OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!”

It may have only been a dream for Alice; playing golf (croquet) with the Red Queen in Las Vegas, dancing with flamingos, and eating tarts, but for one afternoon it was my Wonderland too.

If you’d like to take a piece of Wonderland home you can purchase “THE WONDERLAND CHARM” 100% of the net proceeds from each charm sold will benefit the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Available online at www.hillarydruxman.com/philanthropy or in store at 258 McDermot Ave.

We look forward to talking to you next week on Wake Up Winnipeg, and if you missed today's episode, you can catch a repeat again next Wednesday morning at 6:30 AM on 101.5 FM.

Rebroadcast: 3/16/2011 on CJUM 101.5 UMFM - 6:30 AM

On This weeks episode, we discussed local concert listings and events happening in our town including a special focus on Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet's production of "Wonderland".

Of course, that came after our opening thoughts on the now infamous Charlie Sheen who has been creating quite a buzz and hype around his zany and at times confusing actions in the main stream media.

After a few chuckles we moved on to this weeks episode.

With the thanks to our friend Chris Reid from UMFM's "Cityscape", we featured an interview with Jacelyn Lobay who is playing Alice in the performance.

"Wonderland is a dynamic re-interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s beloved characters, events and themes that is sure to surprise and delight. The Queen of Hearts, The White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter are all on hand, displaying generous doses of wit, camp and humour. The surreal and dark elements that lurk at the original story’s fringes are bravely realized in explosive passages of breathtaking dance and innovative multimedia. Shawn Hounsell, acclaimed choreographer and RWB alumnus, has transformed Wonderland into a multi-sensory experience, with edgy and athletic movement, an inventive electro-acoustic soundscape and unexpected visual treats." - (RWB Website)
The world premier of Wonderland is tonight at the Centennial Concert Hall at 7:30 PM. For more details and to purchase tickets you can log on to www.rwb.org

We featured a track from Herman's Hermits called "Mrs. Brown You Have A Lovely Daughter" in spirit of their upcoming show at the Club Regent Casino. More information can be found on the Casino's of Winnipeg's home page.

Natty and I discussed our thoughts on Hey Rosetta's performance at the Pyramid Cabaret two weeks ago, as part of the Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Series.

The show itself was spectacular and focused primarily on their new album Seeds which was released in February of this year.

Hey Rosetta presented their new album with a fresh combination of guitars, keyboard and violins which blended perfectly and was easy and refreshing to the ears. The band had played in Winnipeg last November which had fans wondering just how different this tour would be.

Not surprising, they show packed all new punches and singles as they preformed in Winnipeg for their second time in four months. It was certainly amazing to see the chemistry on stage between all members of the band.

The sold out event seemed to go over quite well with the sold out crowd, including Natty and myself.

But what was perhaps most surprising was the unexpected cover of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. Fans seemed quite impressed and delighted when during their encore Tim Baker invited Mara Pellerin of openers Gramercy Riffs to sing with him.

We featured this recording from their stop over in Vancouver on this weeks show to capture the spirit of discussion.

During the Hey Rosetta show, we also had a candid conversation with openers Gramercy Riff's during set breaks. The band was very excited to be on tour with Hey Rosetta! And were excited to explore the west cost for the first time. If you missed their show you can check out their Myspace and learn more about them by clicking here.

We will see you next week on Wake Up Winnipeg where we will bring in sports correspondent Victor Jarman to discuss Winnipeg sports news and get his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the return of the Winnipeg Jets.

Until next time, keep on Winning.
